Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl, the photograph of an adolescent girl with bright green eyes and a red headscarf that dawned the cover of National Geographic in 1986, is one of the 20th century’s most iconic images. McCurry’s shots, capturing the human condition under circumstances of war and conflict, made him famous—but his more lighthearted images, featuring culture and tradition throughout the world, are just as riveting. This collection of photographs combines familiarity and surreal foreignness, resulting in a tension that is often present in the long-time Magnum member’s career.
